Roofers in Peterborough

A cathedral city with every age of roof

On the River Nene in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough sits right where the land flattens out into the Fens. Its housing comes from several quite separate periods. The Great Northern Railway opened its main line through the city in 1850 and built the New England district of terraced housing. The Fletton way of making bricks was worked out at brickworks nearby later that century. Then in 1967 Peterborough became a New Town, and the townships of Bretton, Orton and Werrington followed, with Hampton built later still on reclaimed brickfields.

That spread gives roofers in Peterborough a wide mix of problems to solve. Mascote Renovation & Property Solutions Ltd is a family run, fully insured firm, and the rest of this page takes the faults that roofs here tend to develop one at a time, with what we do about each.

Wind and storm damage

Open fenland offers little shelter, and a strong wind off it finds the weak points of a roof. Ridge tiles work loose, the mortar along the verges cracks away and flashings lift. We bed ridge tiles back down or replace them, make the verges good and dress or renew the lead so the roof is tight again before the next spell of bad weather.

Slipped tiles, broken tiles and leaks

One missing tile is enough to let rain reach the felt and timbers underneath. With roof repairs we take on slate and tile on pitched roofs of any age. We swap the damaged pieces, find the true source of a leak and check the surrounding area so the same patch does not fail twice.

Flat roofs holding water

Puddles that are still sitting on a flat roof days after rain point to a dip in the deck or a blocked outlet. We clear the drainage, correct the ponding, patch or reseal the surface and renew the trims at the edges. If the roof needs a fresh flat roofing covering we can lay it in EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass or felt.

Tired fascias and gutters

Flaking paint, soft timber and gutters that drip at every joint mean the roofline is due for attention. We carry out facias replacement in Peterborough using UPVC boards, upgrade the soffits, and clean, repair or replace guttering and downpipes.

Five signs worth acting on

  • A brown stain or damp patch on a ceiling or chimney breast
  • Tiles or slates that are cracked, out of line or lying on the ground
  • Lead that has come away from the wall or the chimney
  • A gutter that dips in the middle or leaks where two lengths join
  • Thick moss, or any damage you can see from the garden

When a new roof is the better answer

Repairs make sense while the rest of the roof is sound. Once tiles are failing all over, the battens or felt beneath have perished, or you are paying for a different repair every winter, replacing the roof is the more sensible route.

We fit new roofs using slate, clay tiles or concrete tiles, and flat roofing systems on buildings that have them. New ridge tiles, lead and roofline go on as well. Everything is done to current building regulations. We take the old roof away, tidy the site and guarantee the result in full.

The kinds of area we cover

Close to the centre are the Victorian railway terraces, New England among them, with slate roofs and brick stacks that now need regular upkeep.

Further out are the townships planned from the 1970s onwards. Their roofs are mainly concrete tile, many with a flat roofed garage alongside, and the original fascias and gutters are often still in place. We work on both, for homeowners and for commercial premises.
