Our home town
Northampton is where Mascote Renovation & Property Solutions Ltd is based, so if you are looking for roofers in Northampton you are dealing with a family run firm on its own doorstep. We are fully insured, the work is done by our own team and all of it carries a guarantee.
As the county town of Northamptonshire, set on the River Nene, Northampton has two very different kinds of housing. One is the terraced streets that grew up with the boot and shoe trade. The other is the estates added from the 1970s, when the town was expanded on its eastern side. Each has its own type of roof and its own usual faults, so we have set this page out the same way.
Victorian terraces from the shoe trade years
By the late 1800s Northampton had a great many shoe factories set among its terraced streets, and the Boot and Shoe Quarter is a conservation area today. Houses of that age were mostly roofed in slate. Neighbours often share a chimney stack, and lead flashing keeps the rain out at every junction with brickwork.
After well over a century, slates slip as their fixings wear, mortar falls out of the stack and lead lifts or splits. These are the faults our roof repairs on slate roofs put right. We replace slipped and broken slates, renew lead flashing with the soakers beneath it and any back gutter, repoint stacks and rebuild them where the brickwork has gone too far. Pots and cowls can be replaced, and a chimney that is no longer used can be taken down.
Estates built from the 1970s
Northampton was named a New Town in 1968 and grew quickly through the following decade. The Eastern District estates were among the first to go up. Homes from this period usually have concrete tiled roofs, a flat roofed garage or porch, and fascia boards that have stood up to decades of weather.
Here the common jobs are different. Cracked or slipped concrete tiles and loose ridge tiles need putting right before water gets in. Flat roofs over garages and porches can be patched, resealed or laid again, whether in felt, in GRP fibreglass or in EPDM rubber. Worn fascias and soffits come off and UPVC goes up in their place, and the gutters and downpipes are cleaned, mended or renewed while we are there.
Roof refurbishment in Northampton
Some roofs are past patching. If leaks keep coming back in new places, or the slates or tiles are failing all over, roof refurbishment makes more sense than one more repair. We strip the old covering and fit a new roof in natural slate, or in clay or concrete tiles. The lead, the ridge and the roofline are renewed as part of the same job.
Roof refurbishments in Northampton vary from a single terrace slope to a whole detached house, and we look at the style of the property and how it will be looked after in future before we suggest a system. The finished roof is built to current building regulations. The old one is taken away, the site is left clean and the new roof is guaranteed in full.
Building work: lofts, extensions, property refurbishment
The same team also takes on building work in the town. We convert lofts with dormers, rooflights and hip to gable designs, build single storey, rear and side return extensions, and refurbish properties inside and out, from kitchens and bathrooms to plastering, damp proofing and decorating.
